ALAPPUZHA: Police have registered a case against five Congress workers over a cyber attack against AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal through social media. The five are part of a group of Congress workers supporting VD Satheesan, and the case has been registered under non-bailable sections.
The accused are part of the group that allegedly circulated abusive and derogatory social media posts targeting KC Venugopal at a time when discussions over who would become Kerala’s Chief Minister were gaining momentum.
The complaint was filed by Johnson Abraham, a member of the KPCC Political Affairs Committee, alleging that Venugopal was subjected to continuous cyber attacks through social media.
The complaint included details of the social media accounts allegedly used for the cyber attacks, along with details of the posts circulated through those accounts.
Action After Months-Old Complaint
Johnson Abraham had initially submitted the complaint to the State Police Chief. However, after alleging that no action was taken for months, he submitted a representation to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala.
Following the Home Minister’s direction, the IG of the Cyber Wing was assigned to conduct an investigation into the matter.
The case against the five Congress workers has now been registered as part of that investigation. The Alappuzha Cyber Crime Police have initiated further proceedings based on the complaint.
Social Media Accounts Under Scanner
The investigation will examine the social media posts circulated against KC Venugopal, the accounts from which the posts were published, and the role of those allegedly behind the posts.
According to police reports, the posts were circulated during the period when discussions were underway over the Chief Ministerial choice following the UDF’s victory in the Assembly election. Venugopal’s name was also part of those discussions.
The police have collected details of the five social media accounts mentioned in the complaint. Further investigation is expected to establish the circumstances behind the posts and the involvement of the persons booked in the case.
