NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of three High Court Chief Justices for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court.
The names recommended are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice D.K. Upadhyay, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
The recommendation was recorded in the Supreme Court Collegium’s official resolution dated September 28, 2026. The proposal will now go through the further administrative process before a final decision on the appointments is taken.
Three Vacancies in the Supreme Court
The approved strength of the Supreme Court is 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. At present, the apex court has 34 sitting judges. The recommendation of the three High Court Chief Justices would therefore be part of the process to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court.
The Collegium’s recommendation will now be considered by the Central Government as part of the appointment process. The final appointments will take place only after completion of the prescribed administrative procedures.
Names Recommended by Collegium
Justice Sunita Agarwal is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, while Justice D.K. Upadhyay heads the Delhi High Court. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh is the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
The recommendation of all three names has been formally recorded in the Supreme Court’s Collegium resolutions published on September 28.
The next stages of the appointment process will determine whether the recommendations receive final approval and the three judges are appointed to the Supreme Court.
