KARUR: A year has passed since the crowd crush at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay’s rally in Karur claimed 41 lives, turning a political gathering into one of the most tragic episodes in Tamil Nadu’s recent public life.
The incident occurred on September 27, 2025, at Velusamypuram in Karur, where a huge crowd had gathered to see Vijay, who was then leading TVK’s political campaign. The Supreme Court later recorded that 41 people died and more than 100 were injured in the crowd crush.
What began as hours of anticipation quickly turned into chaos when the crowd surged during the rally. People had gathered from different parts of the region, including families with children, to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician.
The scale of the gathering and the subsequent crowd movement made rescue operations difficult. Police and members of the public helped move the injured to nearby hospitals as the extent of the tragedy became clear.

The CBI has also examined allegations concerning the movement of Vijay’s vehicle at the rally site. The investigation is intended to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal crowd crush.
The Supreme Court, while dealing with petitions arising from the tragedy, formally recorded the incident as a crowd crush at Velusamypuram on September 27, 2025, resulting in 41 deaths and injuries to more than 100 people.
Vijay Returns to Karur
In July 2026, Vijay returned to Karur for the first time since the tragedy after becoming Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. During the visit, he met families of victims and announced that a memorial would be built in memory of those who died.
The visit also included the distribution of compassionate appointment orders to relatives of some victims.
