Washington: The White House has launched “TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station,” a 24/7 digital streaming platform featuring President Donald Trump’s speeches, administration announcements, public appearances and other official content.
The platform went live on Monday evening through the White House’s official YouTube channel, amid an escalating dispute between the Trump administration and several major US news organisations over access to the White House. The White House said the stream would be updated in real time and bring together the administration’s major announcements, presidential remarks and highlights in one place.
The initial programming included footage from Trump’s previous public appearances, including his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. The White House promoted the service as a way for viewers to access presidential and administration content directly.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico sue Trump administration
The launch came on the same day that CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit challenging the administration’s decision to bar their journalists from the White House. The three organisations argue that revoking their journalists’ access violates constitutional protections, including First Amendment rights. They are seeking a court order restoring their access while the case proceeds. A hearing on their request for emergency relief is scheduled for Wednesday.
The White House has defended the restrictions, arguing that the First Amendment protects the media’s right to publish but does not automatically guarantee individual news organisations access to the White House grounds, briefing room or presidential press pool. The administration has also accused the affected outlets of unfair reporting, while the organisations dispute that justification.
Major US networks suspend White House TV pool
The dispute has also disrupted the traditional White House television pool, a rotating arrangement involving ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC. The networks share footage of presidential events with other broadcasters and news organisations.
After CNN was prevented from carrying out its scheduled pool assignment, the other major networks announced that they would suspend presidential pool coverage rather than replace CNN. In a joint statement, the networks said the public has an important interest in receiving accurate and independent information about the government.
With the television pool disrupted, the White House’s own video feed has become a more prominent source of footage from presidential events. The launch of Trump TV gives the administration a direct digital platform to distribute its own video content without relying on the traditional television pool.
Trump defends restrictions
Trump has defended the decision to restrict access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico, arguing that news organisations have an obligation to report fairly. He has rejected suggestions that the media dispute could result in a broader boycott of his presidency.
The legal battle over press access is now unfolding alongside the suspension of the White House television pool, while the newly launched Trump TV continues to provide administration-produced video content around the clock.
