DEOGHAR: Doctors at AIIMS Deoghar in Jharkhand have successfully performed a complex brain surgery while keeping the patient conscious throughout the procedure, marking an important development in advanced neurosurgical care in the region.
The institute announced the successful procedure on Tuesday.
While patients are generally placed under anaesthesia and kept unconscious during major operations, certain types of brain surgery require the patient to remain awake under carefully controlled conditions. This allows surgeons to continuously monitor critical brain functions and reduce the risk of affecting areas responsible for speech, sensation, vision and other essential abilities.
According to AIIMS Deoghar Public Relations Officer Dr Vimal Munda, the procedure was carried out by a team from the Department of Neurosurgery led by Dr Chandrama Biswas and Dr Saurabh Kumar.
The anaesthesiology team was headed by Dr Sanjay Kumar and included Dr Neha Bharti, Dr Girish and Dr Saurav.
Patient remained conscious during surgery
During the procedure, the patient was kept conscious under controlled conditions. The anaesthesiology team continuously monitored the patient’s vital condition while the surgical team interacted with the patient at different stages of the operation.
Doctors engaged the patient in brief conversations during the surgery to assess whether operating near sensitive areas of the brain was affecting specific functional abilities.
Such monitoring is particularly important when a surgical procedure involves regions associated with speech, sensation or vision. By assessing the patient’s responses in real time, surgeons can better identify how manipulation of sensitive brain areas is affecting neurological functions during the operation.
Dr Munda highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring during such complex neurosurgical procedures, particularly when critical functional regions of the brain are involved.
The successful operation demonstrates the availability of advanced neurosurgical capabilities at AIIMS Deoghar, potentially expanding access to specialised neurological treatment for patients in Jharkhand and neighbouring areas.
AIIMS Deoghar serves patients from several districts and nearby regions, including Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Asansol, Durgapur, Giridih and Jamtara. The institute caters to patients from nearly 15 districts in and around the region.
The availability of complex procedures such as awake brain surgery could help patients access specialised neurological care closer to home, potentially reducing the need to travel to major cities or other states for certain advanced treatments.
