Pilot receives prestigious honour after helping avert an onboard security incident; warm exchange with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan goes viral
Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar attended a ceremony hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with stitches across his head and his left arm in a sling. He was there to receive an honour for his courage and role in helping avert a serious security incident aboard a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. However, it was his light-hearted exchange with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that caught widespread attention online.
The UAE President honoured Machchhar and his fellow flydubai crew members with the First Class Order of Zayed II in recognition of their courage, professionalism and commitment to passenger safety. During the ceremony, the President checked on the injured pilot’s condition and asked when he expected to recover. The conversation took a humorous turn when he offered to teach Machchhar how to fight once he had healed.
UAE President Checks on Injured Indian Pilot
As the two greeted each other, Machchhar embraced the UAE President and said, “It’s my honour, Your Highness.”
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan noticed the visible stitches across the pilot’s head and enquired about his recovery. Seeing Machchhar’s left arm in a sling, the President asked, “When will you heal?”
“Maybe two months,” the pilot replied.
The President then said, “So I have an idea. When you heal, I want to have a session with you to train you how to fight.”
The remark prompted laughter from both of them. Responding warmly, Machchhar placed his hand on his heart and said, “It’s my biggest honour.”
The President also reassured the flydubai crew and passengers of the UAE’s continued support, describing them as family.
“Whatever happened in your life, UAE is your country and there is a home for you here, and you have a family,” he told them.
A video of the interaction has since drawn attention on social media, with viewers responding to the President’s friendly gesture towards the injured pilot.
Captain Smit Machchhar’s Serious Head Injury
Machchhar’s injuries were sustained during an attack in the aircraft’s cockpit. According to reports, his co-pilot, Hamam Al Hammami, struck him with a cockpit crash axe, leaving him with a compound depressed skull fracture.
The attack occurred aboard flydubai Flight FZ 1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The incident triggered a serious emergency, placing the crew’s ability to respond under immense pressure.
Commercial aircraft carry emergency equipment, including crash axes, for use in specific emergency situations. Following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, aviation security arrangements were strengthened, including changes to the placement of certain equipment.
UAE Recognises Flydubai Crew’s Courage
The honours were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.
He praised the crew for their sense of responsibility, professionalism and dedication to passenger safety.
The ceremony was attended by senior UAE officials, including Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, and Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.
The recognition highlighted the crew’s response to the incident and their commitment to protecting passengers during a potentially dangerous situation.
Flydubai Flight FZ 1073 Plunges Nearly 14,000 Feet
Flight FZ 1073 was carrying more than 170 passengers, including 24 children, when the cockpit incident occurred.
After Al Hammami allegedly attacked Machchhar with the crash axe, the aircraft reportedly plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. The incident created a critical situation aboard the flight, with the crew required to respond quickly to protect those on board.
Machchhar’s appearance at the UAE ceremony, despite his visible injuries, added a personal dimension to the recognition. His interaction with the UAE President also brought attention to the pilot’s recovery and the crew’s role in responding to the incident.
