New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted India’s relatively low per capita carbon emissions, saying the country’s contribution remains less than half the global average. PM Modi made the remarks while inaugurating an international conference on environment and climate. The two-day conference is being attended by environmental experts, Supreme Court judges, legal experts and senior government officials.
‘Developing countries often unfairly blamed’
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said developing countries are often held responsible for global carbon emissions despite significant differences in per capita emissions. He said developed countries emit around six times more carbon dioxide per person compared with India. “India’s contribution to per capita carbon emissions is less than half of the global average,” PM Modi said, while stressing the need to consider the historical context of emissions.
Focus on climate responsibility
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid continuing global discussions over climate responsibility, emissions reduction and the differing obligations of developed and developing nations. India has consistently emphasised that climate action should take into account both historical emissions and the development needs of emerging economies. The conference brings together stakeholders from the environmental, legal and policy sectors to deliberate on key issues related to climate change and environmental protection.
