New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday announced the schedule for biennial elections to 28 Legislative Council seats across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Polling will be held on October 23, from 8 am to 4 pm, while counting of votes will take place on October 27 from 5 pm onwards. The elections are being held for seats falling vacant due to the retirement of sitting members.
State-wise seat distribution
Uttar Pradesh: Elections will be held for 11 seats, including five Graduates’ constituencies and six Teachers’ constituencies.
Bihar: Eight seats are up for election — four Graduates’ and four Teachers’ constituencies. The constituencies include Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi Graduates’ constituencies, along with Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Saran Teachers’ constituencies. The terms of the sitting members end on November 16.
Maharashtra: Elections will be held for five seats, comprising three Graduates’ and two Teachers’ constituencies. These include Aurangabad Division Graduates’, Pune Division Graduates’, Nagpur Division Graduates’, Amravati Division Teachers’ and Pune Division Teachers’ constituencies.
Karnataka: Four seats will go to polls — two Graduates’ and two Teachers’ constituencies. The constituencies are Karnataka South-East Graduates’, Karnataka West Graduates’, Karnataka North-East Teachers’ and Bangalore Teachers’.
