New Delhi, October 11: CJP activists Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been released by an Executive Magistrate court in Delhi following their preventive detention, according to Ratna Singh, CJP’s head of legal affairs.
The three were produced before the Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantonment Police Station after being detained in connection with a protest in the national capital.
“Executive Magistrate court releases Abhijeet, Saurav and Ashutosh,” Ratna Singh said in a post on X. Advocate Soutik Banerjee also confirmed their release, stating that all three were free to leave.
Dipke Alleges Police Detention Aboard Flight
CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke, who was travelling from Mumbai to Delhi to participate in the protest, had alleged in an Instagram video that police officers boarded his aircraft after it landed at Delhi Airport and attempted to detain him and his associates.
In the video, Dipke accused the police of trying to arrest them inside the aircraft despite their stated intention to participate in a peaceful protest. He compared the incident to actions during the Emergency and accused the government of suppressing dissent.
The allegations were made by Dipke in the video. The circumstances surrounding the detention were not independently established in the account provided.
Delhi Police Registers Over 20 FIRs
Meanwhile, Delhi Police said it had registered more than 20 FIRs in connection with attempts to forcibly stage a protest on October 10. The cases involve alleged offences relating to the disruption of law and order, obstruction of government work and assault on police personnel. Police said four people had been detained in connection with the incidents.
A video that circulated widely on social media, reportedly from October 10, shows four people allegedly assaulting individuals near the Civic Centre.
Court Rejects Plea Seeking Action Against Police
Earlier on Saturday, a Delhi court dismissed an application filed on behalf of Ratna Singh seeking the registration of an FIR or a non-cognisable report against police personnel.
The court held that the application was not maintainable because it lacked an appropriate affidavit and did not identify a specific public servant against whom the allegations had been made.
The application alleged that Singh had been wrongfully confined and prevented from attending the October 10 protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She had also sought a direction for the submission of a status report.
Heavy Security, Mass Detentions in Delhi
Delhi witnessed heightened security, mass detentions and political tensions on Saturday as police deployed heavily around the CJP-led protest at Jantar Mantar.
The demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. According to the report, around 1,000 people were detained across the national capital, including prominent Opposition leaders such as Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
The release of the three CJP activists comes amid continuing political controversy over the protest, the police response and allegations of restrictions on demonstrators.
