Beijing: Tibet was jolted by another earthquake on Saturday morning, days after a powerful tremor killed 16 people in the region. The latest tremor measured 4.5 on the Richter scale. Although it was less intense than the earlier earthquake, it triggered panic among residents. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
According to data from India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was centred at latitude 31.485° North and longitude 93.528° East. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.
Chinese authorities continue rescue and relief operations to locate affected people and provide assistance. Search efforts are being carried out with the help of drones, unmanned aircraft and satellites. Reports indicate that more than 12,000 people have been moved to safer locations.
Relief supplies have also been dispatched to affected areas. These include 1,000 prefabricated houses, 3,239 tents, 2,821 folding beds and 4,280 blankets to provide shelter and essential support to those displaced by the disaster.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is monitoring the rescue operations, the Associated Press reported. He has directed officials to ensure adequate accommodation for affected residents and take all possible measures to minimise casualties. Authorities have also been instructed to closely monitor seismic activity in the region, including the possibility of further aftershocks.
