New Delhi: Highlighting India’s rapid progress in digital connectivity and the telecommunications sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country has achieved significant expansion in 5G services. He was speaking after inaugurating the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 in New Delhi.
The India Mobile Congress 2026 is being held from October 7 to 10 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. Recalling the launch of 5G services in India at the India Mobile Congress in 2022, the Prime Minister said the technology has since expanded rapidly across the country. More than 5.5 lakh 5G base stations are currently operational, with 5G services now available in every district of the country, he said.
PM Modi also highlighted the crucial role played by telecommunications and mobile connectivity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital connectivity enabled children to continue their education, helped families stay connected and made remote work possible. Digital networks also played a key role in delivering government services and welfare benefits to citizens.
Citing the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi as an example, the Prime Minister said technology has made government services more transparent and convenient. Farmers receiving an alert on their mobile phones when financial assistance is credited to their accounts is an example of how digital systems have improved service delivery.
He further said smartphones are no longer limited to calls and messaging. Technology has made it possible to access a wide range of services quickly, reducing travel, waiting time and expenses while making everyday life more convenient. The government will continue efforts to expand mobile towers in remote areas, strengthen fibre networks and make mobile data more affordable, PM Modi said. The Prime Minister stressed that the goal is to build a strong, inclusive digital ecosystem that reaches people across every part of the country.
The theme of India Mobile Congress 2026 is ‘Scale Without Boundaries.’ The event is focusing on emerging technologies and strategic sectors including 5G, 6G, AI networks, semiconductors, cybersecurity and quantum communications.
