Kochi: Amrita School of Spiritual and Cultural Studies is offering an opportunity to explore the foundational principles of Sanatana Dharma, India’s philosophical traditions, the Vedas, Puranas and spiritual practices through a one-year online programme. The Certificate Program in Hindu Studies is scheduled to begin on November 9, 2026, with a course fee of ₹6,000.
The programme aims to introduce learners to the diverse dimensions of Hindu culture and spiritual heritage. Its core themes include the relationship between human beings, nature and the divine, along with the philosophy of life presented by Sanatana Dharma.
Drawing on the wisdom passed down through generations of sages, the course will examine the four Purusharthas — Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha — as well as concepts such as Karma, rebirth and the cycle of Samsara.
Four papers covering a wide range of subjects
The programme is structured around four papers: Introduction to Hindu Studies, Hindu Literature, Indian Philosophical Systems, and the Cultural and Social Aspects of Hinduism.
The first paper introduces learners to the history of Hinduism, its worldview, and concepts such as Dharma, Rta, creation and the Creator.
The second focuses on Hindu literature, including the Vedas, Vedic literature, Dharmashastras, Puranas, Upapuranas and epics. It will also explore the philosophical ideas embedded in traditional narratives and Puranic stories.
The section on Indian philosophy covers the Shad Darshanas, or the six classical schools of Hindu philosophy, along with Vedanta. It also examines Pratityasamutpada in Buddhism, Saptabhangi in Jain philosophy and the traditional connections of Sikhism.
Other subjects include the Ajivika tradition, Charvaka philosophy, the non-theistic Samkhya school, and the relationship between tribal cultures and Sanatana Dharma.
The fourth paper explores the social and cultural dimensions of Hinduism. Topics include Varnashrama Dharma, Hindu traditions across different parts of the world, dialogue between Hindu thought and modern science, diverse religious traditions, rituals, festivals and sacred places.
Two classes every week
The one-year programme will feature two classes each week. One will be a live online session, while the other will be a pre-recorded video learning module.
The course is designed to help participants develop a comprehensive understanding of the foundational principles of Sanatana Dharma, its major texts and its philosophical traditions.
The learning outcomes also include understanding the relevance of spiritual practices, personal spiritual growth, and the contribution of Hindu thought and traditions to happiness, peace and social harmony.
According to the organisers, the programme will also help learners explore the relevance of Hindu philosophy and cultural traditions in the contemporary world.
