Uttarakhand Hit by 4.9 Magnitude Earthquake at Night; Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR and Other Northern States

Chamoli: Uttarakhand was jolted by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, with tremors also felt across several parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The earthquake occurred at around 10:15 pm.

According to information released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), Chamoli was the epicentre of the earthquake. The tremor was recorded at a depth of approximately 13 kilometres beneath the surface.

Following the earthquake, reports emerged of tremors being felt in Delhi-NCR and various other parts of North India. Residents in several areas reportedly experienced shaking that lasted for a few seconds. There have been no reports so far of major damage or casualties.

Why the Himalayan Region Is Prone to Earthquakes

Uttarakhand is located in a geologically active region. The movement and continuous collision of the Indian tectonic plate with the Eurasian plate is one of the major reasons for frequent earthquakes in the Himalayan region.

The pressure generated by this tectonic movement accumulates along various fault systems. Major geological structures, including the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT), play a crucial role in the seismic behaviour of the Himalayan region.

Uttarakhand has witnessed powerful earthquakes in the past. The 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake and the 1999 Chamoli earthquake caused extensive damage and loss of life. Against this backdrop, Uttarakhand is considered an earthquake-prone region by the scientific community.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation following the latest tremor. Further details on its impact, if any, are awaited.
